A production oozing heart and soul, with a cast able to relate every word of dialogue with reliance and intention. Sharp, precise singing accompanied by a balanced, unobtrusive orchestra, produced a glorious sound that captured the sentiment of the moment. None more so, than the simple, but, oh so impressively staged 'Sabbath Prayer', performed on an extended stage, it allowed cast optimum space to express their confident stage presence. Credit to back stage crew, whose swift, quiet scene changes ensured momentum was maintained. Onoccasion lighting was unsympathetic to the ambience of a dismal sequence, brightening the hue to excess. Well balanced sound enhanced principal dialogue but needed adjustment for chorus numbers, amplified voices soared above others. Principal characters achieved credibility, some able to display a touching vulnerability which tugged at the heart strings. Necessary emotion continually bubbled at the surface but to the detriment of those witty lines of dialogue which need to be firmly established, adding depth to the story and lightening the gloom. A controversial ending, minus a curtain call, left the audience reflecting on the emotive story line, a perfect choice for this stirring production.
