The official NODA critique of the 2010 SACOS production:
MY FAIR LADY. Sidmouth Arts Club Operatic Society. Manor Pavilion. April 2010.
Director: Alec Fellows-Bennett Musical Director: John Amery Choreography: Vicky Salter.
Probably one of the most popular musicals ever, with its variety of excellent cameo parts, delightful music, every number well known, strong story line and the opportunity for several dance routines. Style oozed from every corner of the stage, from the home produced black and white set framing the projected backdrop, to the elegant costumes, beautifully co-ordinated and accessorised, Cast took a moment or two to energise themselves before displaying with full force, the amount of work they had obviously put into their performance. Eliza (Lameze Stout) looked and played every inch 'the squashed cabbage leaf' nurtured to aristocracy by a suitably testy Higgins (Nigel Broome), whose performance showed more than a passing resemblance to the acting manner and style of Dustin Hoffman. Along with a well cast, gentlemanly Pickering (James Pellow), all performed with deft aplomb (a wonderful expression, seen written elsewhere and particularly applicable). Brian Rees is to be commended for his energetic portrayal of Doolittle, shaking a leg with the best of them and still managing to sing. There was a need for more grime though, Doolittle should almost be smelt before seen. A slightly disappointing 'bitty' ending did not stir the emotion as much as I would have liked, even so, the production was just 'loverly'
